Why do you automatically assume it is because of some bias against women? When as a young teacher I was told this, it was by a female teacher - and my boss. I am by nature somewhat quiet and very private. Students perceived me as cold and unapproachable, and it therefor affected my rapport with them. I worked on the things suggested to me - including smiling more - and it made a significant difference, including how engaged my students were in rehearsal. Of course the flip side of this is the old credo, "Don't smile before Christmas." No, I am not advocating that. Saw a great statement a few years back (can't remember who said it). "Every day I try to not offend anyone. I try even harder to not be offended."
