Day 1:
e-s-s e-s-s s-s-s-s s-s-s-s on Bb, then again on C, then again on D, then so on up the Bb scale. One measure per chord tone. Start at MM=100, and yes, kids CAN double-tongue that slowly. Doing o will actually work to improve their DT flexibility and facility. Work your way up to MM=130, up by fives.
Day 2:
Change to the Eb concert scale. Same rhythm. Start at 100, go up to 140, up by eights.
Day 3:
Change to the F concert scale. Same rhythm. Start at 100, go up to 150, up by tens.
Day 4:
Stay on the F concert scale, try the other octave. Don't increase speeds, go 100-150, up by tens.
Day 6+:
Continue to increase speed on maximum by 5-10 BPM per day. Top out around 180 or so.
Continue to change scale (this also helps review scales, obviously) and they work on precision of rhythm. Do this exercise for 5-10 mins a day for two weeks.
Week three:
Pentascales, up, down, then up and down. One note per scale tone. Do the same speed increases.
Once they have a fundamental understanding of tonguing and airflow, THEN begin applying it to an actual piece of music.
