Without a properly sized stick, you will not attain the full tone of the drum. Your 5Bs lack low frequencies and as someone else said above, we can hear it. We use the carpet to manipulate resonance, like the horns use shields and stages use shells. The problem is overplaying, not the sticks. Your students may have trouble transitioning to high school drumline where we use much beefier sticks, heights, and velocities. To be fair, judges probably won't care or notice. I'll eat my hat if someone can produce an official adjudication sheet that addresses stick choice.
