Texas Thespian Festival was and is in November. Your theatre arts teacher likely attends this one.
Texas Teachers of Language Arts is next week.
Texas Social Studies Convention was in October.
TCEA which is geared towards instructional coaches is also during the same weekend as TMEA.
TABSE is the week after TMEA. In my district, many educators go to that one.
And that's just a quick series of Googles. This doesn't even get into AVID, JROTC, Dance, Art, ELA, Special Education, Administrators conferences - which all regularly also happen during the school year. Teachers go to these conventions all the time.
I brought up the point about being required to find a sub because quite frankly that's not our job. If you're a supervisor or manager, sure, you should make sure your positions are covered. We are not supervisors. Part of your admin's job is to ensure classes are staffed appropriately. They can't just throw that responsibility on you because they don't want to find a sub or "we're short subs."
They're effectively telling you that you can't get ill and can't take a personal day. You are entitled to your time off. It's a contracted benefit. If you want it to count as a professional day, that's up to the discretion of your admin, but you could still simply take the day off (or two, or three) as a personal day and go to TMEA.
