If that's the case, why not perform one of those other Bach chorales? Or a secular one? It's because the BD wants them specifically to play the Doxology. My question is simply - why?
And again, as I stated, I acknowledge there are thousands of sacred pieces that have significant worth to the history of Western music. I'm not advocating for the removal of sacred music. I'm asking, in this case, specifically, why the Doxology is the chorale that OP is attempting to find an arrangement of.
The Doxology is overtly and at its core "an expression of praise to (the Christian) God" (as sourced from www.christianity.com and the dictionary) and forcing non-Christians to praise God is beyond our purview. Period.
It has no place as a daily chorale in a public school setting. Especially in this day and age when many of our students don't worship God the same way or even the same God - or at all.
Would you feel the same if there were a mandatory Christian schoolwide prayer at the start of every schoolday just after the pledges? It's literally the same thing. It's the same thing that has gotten multiple ISDs sued successfully for doing captive audience prayers before football games. It's not appropriate and it does. not. belong.
