Are they hitting sets together? Does the marching style look uniform? Is spacing uniform throughout the ensemble? Go back to the fundamentals and make sure that you’re meeting those basic expectations before you start worrying about props. A solid fundamental approach will probably serve most bands better than trying to cover up a lack of fundamentals with a bunch of bells and whistles.
Furthermore, does your drill design complement the music choice, or does it seem like it’s generic drill that could go with any music?
Finally, make sure that whatever silks you buy for your flags also match the theme of the show. A lot of times I see bands having “pretty“ flags that really has nothing whatsoever to do thematically with what the show is.
Get someone who is not you and not associated with your program to watch a recording of the band focusing only on marching execution. You know the reasons why there is a seven foot gap between those clarinet players – two kids got sick – but someone who doesn’t know that may question the choice there and those are the types of things that you can work to change.
