If you're like me, you likely worked while going to college (grocery store for 6 years starting in high school), did a few odd jobs here and there over the years and paid the self employment tax which counts for SS, taught 2 years out-of-state etc. which does add up. I kept up with the math and just last month went to my local SS office and applied to start getting SS when I turn 62 this coming January.
Lo and behold, starting next March I'll be getting $302 per month in SS benefits for the rest of my life. The WEP prevents me from getting what I should get, but hey I'll take this. Might as well as I earned it and paid into it from my non-TRS gigs over my lifetime.
I'd recommend checking into it if I were you as the SS Administration will NOT contact you if you're eligible for any $$ from them. It's up to you.
