Our 6th grade band (about 25 students, all mixed together) is a disciplinary nightmare. I know kids that young will mostly be pretty immature but... goodness. We've tried incorporating more structure in the last few weeks (lining up before entering, getting instruments one row at a time, very clear expectations for behavior with very clear consequences) and we have a demerit system that definitely gets used. It feels like an uphill battle every day trying to get these kids to behave and stop talking long enough to get some quality instruction done.
So my question is... what do you do when nothing else works? Not all of the students are causing problems, but it is a rather large chunk, and I hate seeing the well-mannered kids start to hate band because we have to crack down so hard on all the bad behavior.
