Do the 6 second tryout. You test one measure, or four beats, then two beats in between kids. You hold up fingers to give them their score during those two beats. Ties are broken by the previous chair test, i.e. if two kids get a 5, whoever was ahead on the last test stays ahead.
4 beats takes four seconds
2 beats between takes 2 seconds
40 kids takes four minutes, literally.
I do them almost every day. It allows me to hear every kid several times a week, and they tend to practice more.
How do you chair test your large beginner classes?
Having 40 Clarinets makes is so hard to hear every student and give feed back in one period. If you do it over 2 days it interferes with instruction time.
I'm thinking of just testing 6-8 kids everyday. I don't wanna do google classroom or charms recordings, because I think its important to give the kids immediate live feedback. I might have to adjust my approach though.
