We don't. The kids learn that they are being evaluated daily and we focus more on unity than competition. We even do pass-offs in small groups as it isn't about the individual, but the ensemble. Students reapond to this well and I really don't deal with the jealousy issues and in-fighting I've had with bands where we did chair tests. Students know in sectionals and all-region results where they are comparatively.
Every now and then I have to have a conversation when one top player doesn't get a solo they think they deserve. It is a good life lesson for them to discuss a particular situation doesn't define their abilities.
