"Region is head to head - they advanced and we didn't?" All you needed to say. What about the Regions where all 6As got a 1 and advance (Region 12 for one, but they weren't the only ones)? Which of them should be knocked out so you can tell who had the 'best 1'? One of the reasons Texas bands are great throughout is that the UIL system was designed so that ALL have a chance to succeed. Texas bands have been judged against the UIL standard for longer than 'competitive' marching band in Texas (which started in the mid 80's).
See what happens when you hire someone from out of state...
But there's a WIDE range within each division. there are high 1s and low 1s. My kids are devastated by a 3 that is a high 3. (It was really a 2 that two moron judges gave 3's, but I digress...)
You're truly not paying attention if you think all 1's are equal.
I want my band to see another band got a 90, and we got an 89. That looks better than they got a 1 and we got a 2. 2's are FAILURE in EVERYONE's mind.
The region level IS head-to-head. They advanced and we didn't.
The problem is judging, not necessarily the 1-5 system. When you have 1 judge looking at everything, they see all the bad and miss all the good. If a judge were to concentrate on something like JUST Music or JUST marching or JUST visual, scores would be very different.
We need AT LEAST 5 judges at all levels
Music, Marching, Visual, Overall GE, and Percussion. or something like that. Yes, percussion should have their own judge and WW and Brass get one at area and state level with 7-10 judges
My music may have been a 3+, but my percussion was a 1, my visual was a 1, and marching was 2 over all GE was 1-. a 1 overall.
For the next person commenting, "It's about the music, its the most important!" No, no it's not. That is what C&CR is for. This is MARCHING BAND. note that the marching part comes first. Music is very important, I agree. But most judges seem to weigh music much, much heavier. Understandable, the score sheet has 3 sections. Two of them are music related and one is marching. None for visual ("Drill/Integration of Marching Components" is not visual) There should be a serious re-evaluation of what marching band in UIL is. If it's about the music, then have two C&CR's all year.
Marching band is competitive. Marching band is about the Visual as well at the music. It will be for the foreseeable future. We cannot deny it. EVERY other part of UIL is competitive. THAT'S WHAT UIL IS FOR.
