The best advice I can give you about the scrutiny thing is that most judges don't care what style you march, as long as it's consistent throughout the ensemble. Make sure you define specifically what each body part should look like to your kids at all times. When they're learning drill, don't just teach them set 1-16 steps-set 2. Teach them posture and facing for set 1-16 steps and where their upper body is facing-and what to do at arrival. If they learn the drill with the correct movement, they won't have to make as many corrections. Too many times we teach the drill and then go and clean it later. Well, that means every rep you've done when they're not sure of the fundamentals has been a rep they didn't reinforce the correct fundamentals. It may take longer to put the show on the field this way, but for my group, this is much more efficient for the season.
