Re: Students not wanting to participate in Marching Band
So you're saying football is the only thing that's saving marching band? So how valuable is marching band on its own? If marching band exists to serve football, how exactly does that benefit our students?
Marching band pays what bills? So where does that exorbitant fee the kids pay come in play?
If football went away, MUSIC EDUCATION would disappear from schools? Is this really what you believe? If that's the case, we as a profession are doing something incredibly wrong.
Music should stand on its own merit and value. If we need football to justify, we aren't doing our jobs.
Marching Band pays the bills for everything else band related. As for choir, I have heard the National Anthem done by HS Choirs at football games. As for orchestra, the Full Orchestra does have brass/woodwinds. Those instruments greatly depend on a budget which is dependent on Football, here in Texas. If football went away, the band would soon follow. Orchestra would fall some time later and there is always choir at Church.
Why is it necessary to participate in marching band if you desire a music education experience?
Choir/orchestra doesn't have to do that... Why should the band kids be forced to spend their time AND money on an activity they have little interest in.
