Re: Students not wanting to participate in Marching Band
In our situation (Title I 6A in a highly urban area) we have several kids like this. We have 182 in band, with 3 full concert bands and a small remedial 4th group. In order to participate in one of the top 2 bands, you must be in marching band, or have another activity that takes also practices at the same time as the marching band (football, volleyball, cheer, drill team) or a medical note from a doctor stating that they should not participate in marching band. If they just "don't want to march", then we place them in the 3rd or 4th band depending on their ability. We do lose a few good kids, but to us it's better to have a 182 piece band with 130 in marching band than to have 130 in band and not be able to take 3 bands to C&SR in the spring.
Hoping some of you more experienced directors can provide some insight/suggestions on how to handle this situation. During the fall, what do you do with students that just don't want to participate in marching band or football games, but still want to be in band?
