Re: Students not wanting to participate in Marching Band
Every member (and every director) has aspects of being in band that they love, like, dislike, and hate. Actually true of any activity or job. We each have to evaluate and accept that if the love and like parts outweigh the dislike and hate, then we have to learn to like or just tolerate the negative parts to get to do the positive. If the negative outweighs the positive, we have a decision to make.
Secondly, like it or not, marching band pays the bills. Band in Texas is strong because football in Texas is king. A significant number of our programs would not exist if not for marching band, or at least not at anywhere near the same level. Kid needs to get that the parts of band they like don't happen without 'paying the dues' of marching band.
And, I hate pep rallies.
Hoping some of you more experienced directors can provide some insight/suggestions on how to handle this situation. During the fall, what do you do with students that just don't want to participate in marching band or football games, but still want to be in band?
