Re: 8th grade student never in band
student with an "Intellectual Disability" or a student with an IEP/sped teacher because of ADHD, behavior diagnosis, etc.?
If it is an "Intellectual Disability" don't try to have the student play a wind instrument. Have them play percussion. Start the student on a practice pad and work on teaching the student to play steady beat first. Progress from there to auxiliary percussion. For your Christmas concert sleigh bells will work for several tunes. Eventually you may be able to have the student mirror another student of a suspended cymbal part or something like claves. Your sped teacher can even assist with any of these accommodations/modifications. Do all you can to help this student.
If it is normal intelligence student with ADHD/behavior issues that is whole other ballgame.
An 8th grade student was placed in band by the special
Education teacher. She has never been in band before but her parents wanted her there.
I was told that by law I had to have her there and I was
to remediate her.
She will not listen and playes the same note over and over.
I already have 5 other special needs students that were placed in this group. These I had last year and enjoy working with them.
I only have 45 minutes for this class and also part time.
I was told by the principal that he let kids in athletics all the time without any prerequisites.
The sped teacher is even intervening when I have any discipline problems.
I am very frustrated. The sped teacher has called a meeting for the administrators and myself.
Do these teachers have the power to question me, place students in and out of my class and act like administrators.
She just has a sped certification👹
