It's the name, the prestige, and the tradition of the venue. Not every group can get themselves invited to Midwest. Every group can pay their way into Carnegie if they want to.
Plus, your non-band-smart parents have heard of Carnegie Hall. They haven't heard of the Midwest Band Clinic. Much easier sell for the community.
I've never understood the appeal of playing in Carnegie Hall. It is not an actual scheduled concert (you invited yourself), and it costs a lot of money for transportation, food, etc. Are there even standards set for visiting groups like no two's in any concert or marching show for the last five years. I think Mid-West would be a better goal.
