Our little district requires ALL athletes to pay a $100 fee before they are allowed to have any equipment checked out to them. My band kids have to pay a $50 fee straight to the district to help offset the small budget. I charge an additional $60 for shirt, gloves, 3 contest meals and uniform red water bottle. Kids playing school owned instruments pay another $50 for maintenance. If a kid is on free or reduced lunch then that is a whole other story. The district has a "formula" that we have to follow with those kids. We also have booster scholarships for those that cant pay. Never lost a kid due to parents cant afford it.
I call bull on that! Schools don't charge football players lol If a kid doesn't want to buy an instrument, they play low brass. "Civil rights lawsuit" lmao
So.. kids that own their own instrument wind up having to pay more, all in all, to be in band than a kid who doesn't? That's not equitable, and can create a barrier to entry into a program. That's the type of thing that screams "civil rights lawsuit" to some parents.
Be very careful.
And for the record - nearly every athletics team I've ever seen, in every school, requires fees to help pay for pads, shoes, and the like.
I have never seen a reason. They pay for repairs due to neglect, but wear and tear is the school's responsibility. I haven't seen athletics teams charge for pads, lifting equipment, etc...
Should students using school owned instruments pay fees?
