"Were" generally denotes past tense, i.e. "not still occurring." Therefore, the person you replied to made no claim that it was still happening.
Do you have proof that this still occurs? Or are you making stuff up?
That and they were getting held back for two or three years so they could play HS football at 20-21-22 years old, with six years of coaching.
