It should be used as a sweeping motion--I wonder if he is using it like a bassoon half hole or something; leaving the finger on? But yes, for soft entrances it's great technique. But it's supposed to only be on for a split second, not part of the fingering.
An 8th grade student of mine was sounding really flat on his altissimo range, and I found out it was because heís being taught Ďhalf holeí fingerings to help the notes speak better. I think it sounds awful, but I donít want to sound ignorant when bringing this up to my private teacher.
Oh, and Iím a clarinet player and never used half hole fingerings in college... so thatís why Iím so dumbfounded.
