This problem is quite common with beginning flutes. Directors will spend lots of time working the head joint but when you add the other joints students usually struggle to make a sound on the full instrument. For me, it just takes time with the beginners. They will eventually realize all the elements of playing with correct air, aperture, hand position, etc. Patience is key with beginning flutes.
I have a beginner flute player who started the year off able to make a beautiful tone on the head joint. Due to the class structure and certain time constraints I am having to move on to adding the rest of the body in class. This player now struggles with creating her concert F, as well as playing on the head joint. I've placed her mouthpiece, made adjustments, asked her to blow Darth Vader air, checked her moisture line on the lip plate, reset her mouthpiece and still no luck. As a flute player I feel like I should be better able to help her, but I can't think of anything else to do. Help please!
