Re: Students missing or late for rehearsals in small school program
This is a constant struggle in small schools. When building a program you may have to consider if it's worth while for your band to have night rehearsals. If kids will not show up then it may not be worth having them at all. That's the hard truth. I have the same exact theory about summer band. You have to get it to the point of "we want to have after school practice!" I, in your situation, would pick a show(music and drill) that is so easy that there is no way they can be anything but awesome at it. I wouldn't do a second over 5 minutes. If kids start bringing up night rehearsals after a while then ask them if they want to meet as a band next week from so and so time. If it works, keep doing the night rehearsals. It takes a long time to build a band program and a very short time to destroy it. You're already at the destroyed part of that program which was probably done before you got there. Build that thing up by getting all of the kids on the same page. Good luck!
