I don't use grades to penalize or reward in band, because the kids who I'm trying to reward should already be making an A+ because they are those types of kids, and the kids who I would try to penalize aren't motivated by having bad grades, so it's not an effective tool. In my band program, if you take care of your business and live up to the expectations of the program, you won't have any problem making an A. If you aren't taking care of your business, we're going to deal with that in house rather than through grades. The only time I start failing kids in band is if I need to make a case on paper for them to transfer out because the principal or counselor or parent aren't wanting to be cooperative.
I am always looking for a better way to do things. I know this is a hot topic with some, but I was wondering how many of you handle grading your HS bands for many aspects of the program including in class and outside school day rehearsals; performances; games; etc? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
