Re: You have got to be kidding me!
I paid $40/hr for oboe lessons with a top oboe teacher in the state.
$100/hr for violin lessons. I have never been able to charge more than $50/hr myself, but I sat in on a couple of my kids lessons (they were at the prof's house) and she's definitely getting some seriously expert instruction, leading towards conservatory auditions. I think it depends on the instrument. Never heard of band folks charging that much unless they are a sought after professor at a major university.
I feel ya, I know they need to make a living but that is ridiculous. I have more people balk at these high prices than actually follow through and take lessons.
Teaching private lessons is a hard career but $75 is silly.
I tell you I work in a small town school with not much resources and I have a student who is ridiculously talented and deserves a better teacher than me on their instrument. The student wants lessons. The parents want lessons. They are willing to travel. Then you contact them and quote them a rate of $75 AN HOUR!?!?!?!?
Sorry...just venting. This kid deserves a specialist on their instrument and it sucks when this kind of stuff gets in the way.
