Re: 9 yrs for nothing
My wife had to remind me of this as I am likely walking away after this year and I was talking about it being for naught. And she very wisely reminded me that for over 20 years I have dedicated time and attention, much of it at the expense of my own family, to give these students opportunities and experiences they might not otherwise have had and what happens after I leave does not, in any way, take away from what I was able to do for the 1000's of students I stood in front of.
Not for nothing at all!
What we do is much less about a long term program than it is about what we do for the young humans in our presence the years we are here. The kids who were with you those nine years are your legacy. They will not forget their time in band!
...although that experience IS painful, no doubt.
Friday night i had the opportunity to return to my last stop, for lack of a better term. It was great to see some former students and colleagues, of course, but the band....
I spent 9 yrs building that program into something. They were around 55 when i left. Now there are 10 members playing with horrible uncharacteristic sounds and twerking and shaking their butts obscenely in the stands.
I know there is nothing i can do about this, but it is hard to watch. I nearly left in tears!
At least i was able to see my little sister get married the next day, so there is that.
Has anyone else experience anything similar to this during their time? What did you do or not do?
