Re: NHS vs. Marching Band
Not absolutely. Things that get a grade must ALWAYS take priority over things that don't. I will not work out a compromise with a sponsor of an extracurricular club that does not have TEKS and doesn't give out grades.
NEVER should a student be forced to choose. It is our job (the adults) to work out the situation and let the student know what to do. NEVER EVER force a kid to choose. They don't yet have the capacity to make rational decisions.
Let them choose. And remind them before they get sold a bill of BS that band looks much better on a college application than NHS.... And if they are so brainwashed as to throw away years of musical experience for a "club" peace out...
For the first time in my career I am having serious conflicts with our NHS sponsor. I am having kids come tell me they can’t be in band because they have to “choose” NHS or Band. Their meetings are during after school practice (once per month for members and 3-4 times per month for officers). Their service projects are on Saturdays (contest days).
Anyone else having this issue? I have tried talking to the sponsor and it has gone nowhere.
Thanks in advance for any advice.
