Don't go to UIL this year...or even next year (depends on who comes back in January). I would agree with a post below that 25 is the "magic number" where UIL marching is concerned. With that said, I have seen a 12 piece band go to UIL and get a I...but they would be the exception rather than the rule.
I took over a band program that looked on paper like an up and coming program. What we are faced with is the school enrollment is down and only 12 students are in HS Band (8-12). There are other factors that caused the decline, but it wasn't a director change or major schedule change. We have stopped the bleeding and will have students join hopefully in January.
We're fairly well balanced, but we have no percussion. 1 flute (cannot take band but marching with us), 2 clarinets, 1 alto, 1 tenor, 2 trumpets, 1 trombone, 3 baritones, 1 tuba and 1 beginner. I have our tenor sax playing snare and quads and a student that doesn't play anything or read music playing bass drum. I have two students that are possibly moving this week. My bass drummer had a bad accident and will be out a while. Our trombone player that's having knee surgery that will sideline him for 8-10 weeks.
Would this be a good year to not do UIL and rebuild the numbers or go for it and take our medicine? They do march and play well, but it is challenging with the drummers trying to learn how to play. They are not marching but are grounded.
