Re: Percussion marching technique
I'm the opposite of the two posters below. If it is a right crab from a hold, I always have students do a prep step. I find it easier to clean in the sense that you dont have a bunch of kids trying to swing their left foot over their right a bunch of different ways. I also think it is just easier. Just have them take a very small (front toes in line with the middle of the left foot) step back. Doesn't need to be a full 8 to 5 (or even 16 to 5) step.
For context, I teach at a 4a. If I were at a 5a or 6a with a little more kicking of a marching program, I could be persuaded to not take the prep step.
