I go to sporting events, ask about what they've been up to during the weekend. I even share what my family was up to over a break. We always make sure the kids are fed well and taken care of while on trips. We even spend our own money on them a few occasions where the school couldn't pay their way.
I'm very laid back before and after rehearsal. I throw in short breaks to mix up the focus after a while then we get back to work. Primarily because kids aren't there to hear me talk. They want to have success while doing something that maybe they didn't think they could do on their own. Whether it's bringing alive their favorite song and getting into it, or experiencing music maybe they haven't heard. I was pretty surprised how many responded to Salvation or Psalm 42.
