Re: Should my 3-person drumline stand still instead of marching?
I don't think you are crazy for thinking about this. I would have them stand behind the winds and focus on playing well. IMHO, 3 players standing behind the winds will project better than if they are moving around the field...no matter how limited the movement is. Assuming that your going 1 snare, 1 tenor, and 1 bass, there's just way to much exposure on those parts for them to worry about playing AND marching.
Iíve taken a position at a 3A/1C band program where Iíll be responsible for the drumline (among other things). Our drumline is forecasted to have three members and the HBD and I are teetering back and forth on whether to have the line march or stand still behind the winds. Itís not a state year, but we obviously want to do well at contest this year. With such a small drumline, we wonder if taking the marching aspect away will help them focus on playing clean. Are we crazy for considering this? Have any of you 3A BDs done this before? Any other advice or things to take into consideration?
Thanks in advance for your words of wisdom!
