I've been on the hiring side a few times and had this happen to me on every occasion. We interviewed, offered to our top choice, held off several days while they decided and eventually had to hire someone else because the first choice declined or accepted and then backed out prior to signing a contract. On each occasion, I also had candidates call the superintendent, visit the school unannounced, attempt to add me on Facebook, or blow up my phone with calls and messages even though the job posting had clear instructions for how to apply (and included none of those). Perhaps it was my generic "thank you for applying to XHS..." email that opened the door to such intrusions. It's possible that similar occurrences have shaped the hiring practices of others.
Until youíve been on the other side you really donít get it. Then you offer it to your first choice, and then you may have to wait 72 hours for them to discuss it with family. In the mean time you canít say anything to your second or third choice, so theyíre in limbo a bit. And, in todayís world nothing is official until the board approves the hire and contracts are signed, which depending on school boards in the summer could be 2-3 more weeks. In the meantime all these others are screaming how unprofessional, when in reality if the deal falls through somewhere along the way, you may have to go to your second or third choice who hopefully havenít signed anywhere yet.
