It would be nice to look at music ratings older than the mid-70s. I do not if those have been lost to time.
For example, Florida has a database/archive that shows music contest ratings back to 1939-40 (Henry Fillmore was a concert judge at that contest and they did marching, concert, sightreading the same day).
Anyway, some random questions:
When was the Inspection portion of the marching contest dropped?
Why did some regions use only 1 sight-reading judge while others used 3 before 1990?
Who were some of the first schools to deviate from the military marching style?
When was it decided that certain regions would split (old Region 4 used to be the current 4 and 21)?
