Re: Students wanting to do concert band and not marching band
...marching band is just as valid as any other aspect of the program. Once you let a student develop a "whatever" attitude about one part of the program, how long will it be before that attitude permeates to how they look at the rest of the program? How long before you have that mindset soaking in with the rest of the students?
And now I'm going to address the dirty little secret: it doesn't matter how well your concert band, jazz band, chamber groups, S&E events perform....marching band "pays the freight"
. You let marching band slip, you community will notice, and support of the program will suffer. That may not be "right"...but it is true.
Let them play in concert band. If they’re good players and good kids I would want to keep them.
Who cares if it keep being and issue, it’s just marching band...
So I have taken a new job and have had a few students request to NOT do marching band and only do concert band. I have mixed feelings about it as I know concert and marching band are quite different. Usually I have the opposite problem.
These are top band players mostly. It has been allowed in the past and of course students are using that to try and persuade me. My concern is that if I allow it, I will continually have to combat this. What have you done with students who have made this request?
And these are mostly kids that have done at least one year of marching band.
