You can put it down in writing all you want (and should), but ultimately admin is going to fold every time a parent does this.
These are the times we live in.
: So in the past years we've given seniors a
: gold cord as part of their gift for making
: it 7 years as a band student. The gold cord
: is a citation cord worn on their uniform in
: place of a black one denoting their
: classification as senior.
: This year we had a senior who missed 5
: Monday night rehearsals, was late to another
: 7, missed 13 sectionals, missed two public
: performances, missed 5 pass offs, and
: another 4 pass-offs were late.
: Suffice to say this senior did not do their
: job. Because of that we told her we were
: going to withhold the gold cord because the
: band staff did not feel it was earned. Dad
: raised all holy hell and we were told to
: give her the cord. I'm 90% sure because we
: do not have a *written* policy stating what
: it takes to earn, or lose, their cords
: mostly because we've never had a senior like
: this, to miss so many things.
: I'm not here to gripe about it, I'm here to
: say that now we will put down in writing in
: the band handbook as to what it takes to
: earn, and under what grounds a senior can
: lose, their gold cords.
: For those who give gifts would you please
: tell me your system and process? Do the
: seniors have the possibility of losing those
: gifts that you give them?
