A friend of mine worked in another field and didn't get his first real band directing job until he was in his late 30's. It will happen, don't give up.
--Previous Message-- : I got certified last year after 10 years of : teaching privately and performing : professionally. I didn't get a job. I had : one interview, in the district I student : taught in. : : I've worked as a sub this year, including a : long term assignment in band. I got one : interview, but it wasn't "real" in : that they knew who they were going to hire : from the start and I personally knew the : head band director. : : I have no idea how to get a job. I know : myself well enough to know I'm probably : going to be pretty good at this, but besides : experience as a student teacher and as a : sub, I don't have actual band directing : experience on my resume and I think I often : get dismissed immediately because of it. I : can't really blame anybody individually for : not wanting to take a chance on a first year : teacher, but it feels like EVERYBODY thinks : that way. : : Does it hurt that I'm looking for my first : band directing job in my 30s? : : If I don't get a job this year, I have no : idea what I'm going to do. It will feel like : the last few years have been a complete : waste of my life. : : Yeah, I know the general advice is to be : patient. But I'm sick of people telling me : that "something will happen" : because they said the same thing last year : and nothing happened. : : --Previous Message-- : Welp.......... another week, and another : week : of no one contacting me about a position.. : or even asking for an interview....... : Ready to just give up............ : : :
