"Looks like a red car travelling at a high rate of speed may have collided with the bus according to students riding the bus."
This would match with the story one student said when talking on the phone to a local Houston reporter that he felt a bump, then another big bump and everything went black. That first bump was probably the car hitting the bus which probably caused it to go out of control.
It makes me think twice since we are planning the same trip next spring break. Even though I have done the bus trip several times I just might have to go back to flying and taking fewer kids since many can't afford the extra cost as a trade off for their safety.
: Thank you for being responsible, and glad you
: work for a company that respects that. Even
: from Houston, there should be a driver
: change and at least two driver breaks (other
: than meal stops) on that trip from Texas to
: Also, research your bus company. Cheaper or
: small companies struggling to survive try to
: push things like maintenance and tires to
: save a buck.
: I always do the overnight trip, and worry
: more about the other drivers and wildlife
: than my drivers.

: It is scary. I am retired and drive charters
: part time. This might be a wrong assumption,
: but the first thing to check would be driver
: fatigue. Iím paranoid about it as a driver.
: I donít drink coffee or take ďenergyĒ
: supplements on a driving shift. They simply
: mask the fatigue and then your body just
: quits when exhausted. I vary my sleep to be
: safe. Ex. Tonight I am driving 3 hours to
: DFW airport to pick up students at 11:00 pm
: and then bringing them home with a return
: eta of 1:00 am.
: I know that isnít super late, but here is
: what I do....
: This morning I got up at 6 am after 8 hours
: of sleep. This afternoon I will take a 2
: hour nap. I will arrive DFW one hour before
: pick up. Go to grapevine mills mall and have
: a light healthy dinner I will then take a 30
: minute easy walk around the mall. Go pick up
: students and get them and myself home
: If needed I will take a short nap in the bus
: upon return to make sure I am safe going
: I am determined to do what is safe. I have
: even pulled over on a long overnight drive
: and napped for 30 minutes ( with permission
: of the sponsor). I have never had a sponsor
: complain. I think they appreciate me wanting
: to be safe.
: The passengers are important, but I would be
: lying if I didnít admit that I value my
: safety as well.
: My biggest issue in late shift driving is
: accounting for the bad driving of other
: drivers who are obviously tired! Think
: carefully before scheduling an all night
: drive. They can be safe with the right
: company and driver but are inherently more
: dangerous than daytime.
: Im so blessed to work for a company that
: works hard to be safe. We have regular
: safety meetings and are always told that
: they donít mind paying extra hours to us in
: the pursuit of being safe.
