Thanks for your input. My almost entirely 7th trade group was especially nervous for some reason and most of my low brass kids this year are either 504 or special ed. I think you are over generalizing with your statements. This piece just happened to be the perfect storm for my little group this year. One weak bassoon couldn't carry what turned out to be his solo line, and we got nailed. Trumpets counted the rests correctly, but sounded timid when they came in. Low brass kids who normally rely on my strong tubas were floundering with the disconnect between them and tuba. My group read all of the old SR pieces we practiced well, this one just hit my particular group this year exactly wrong on the wrong day.
Rest assured when I also judge groups, I know that I am only judging that group on that day on that performance. I wouldn't think to make any over-generalized comments.
