Re: Band Directing and Commute-Time

Years ago I drove 90 minutes each way for 1 year. The next 5-6 years it was 50-60 minutes depending on traffic (I had to drive through Houston on my way to the Woodlands). Then several years of 20 minutes with no freeways. Now I live 6 minutes away. I'm out the door and blink and I'm at my desk. I took a 3K paycut to come to my current situation but I love the school and I feel like the lack of commute is a gift of an extra hour or two each day. Some days I'm at school 12 hours, which in the old days would have meant leaving my house at 5:30am and getting home at 7:30pm. Now that's leaving at 6:25am and getting home at 6:35pm. I'm playing my instrument more, more involved in my daughter's life, going to movies when I feel like it. Very happy. Do I see my kids and families? Yes... ALL THE TIME. Doesn't bother me a bit.
: What do you guys' average commute time look
: like, and how do you feel about it?
: I'd be interested to know some of you guys'
: thoughts on longer/shorter commute time vs
: the nuances of band directing given some of
: these discussion points:
: -how much time we spend on campus
: -seeing kids/families in public
: -the fact that sometimes we have to run
: home and grab something for ensembles and
: then get back to campus
