You’re right. However, there are dozens of old school directors out there, who still judge, who look down on a program for not programming contrasting music. I have seen comment sheets where judges even said so, and in one case, a borderline band was not “given the benefit of the doubt” because they only “performed in one style.”
Ethical or not, right or not, it still happens.
