It's kind of important. It was one of the first treaties signed by the United States, in 1796.
It states pretty clearly in Article 11 that "As the Government of the United States of America is not, in any sense, founded on the Christian religion" ... and then continues to state that it doesn't discriminate against "Musselmen" (Muslims).
Said treaty was ratified UNANIMOUSLY by the Senate.
Seems pretty obvious to me, but what do I know.
