as a child, they likely wait because they do not realize it is something they can't do. They don't tell parents because they don't realize it's significant. Parents only find out when child tells them, "Come to my Christmas concert". When I was a child, although we didn't celebrate Halloween, I didn't think it was a big deal for me to have a part in the annual Halloween play at school. When I told my parents a couple of days before the performance to come watch me, they pulled me out of it. Classic child/parent miscommunication, I think
