Re: Region Band Auditions

I judge every year and hear plenty of players that are poorly prepared. But I have no problem with a director who requires kids to attend. Some of those kids will try harder to prepare for a tryout that they would have never attended otherwise. Some will not, but they all pay the entry fee, and that helps the region. Requiring kids to go may well keep standards higher in a program. I know most of you will roast me for saying this, but you have to at least consider the benefits of this mindset. I actually require all my top band kids to go, but if they are completely unprepared, i keep them home and make them play for a grade in front of the class. Just be open-minded and score the poor kids really low. That's all I ask. Fire away!
: Directors, please do us ALL a favor and before
: you allow a student to audition, listen to
: them, and if they don't have a clue, LEAVE
: THEM AT HOME!
: It's simply impossible to maintain a
: positive attitude when 30 to 40% of students
: we have to hear haven't got a snowball's
: chance of being selected.
: This is not your band's chair test. That is
: your job, not mine.
