The Houston Pride Band is seeking qualified candidates for the position of Artistic Director.
Houston Pride Band
The Houston Pride Band serves as the concert band in Houston's gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, and straight ally community. HPB is a non-profit 501(c)3 organization supporting the Houston community. The mission of the band is to provide a welcoming, comfortable and safe musical outlet for LGBT and ally musicians to participate in a community band setting. The Houston Pride Band is a member of both the Lesbian and Gay Band Association and the Association of Community Bands.
Artistic Director Position
The Artistic Director of the Houston Pride Band serves as the principal conductor for concert band activities and is responsible for the overall artistic direction of the band. This includes artistic season planning, repertoire selection, rehearsal planning, and conducting. The Artistic Director works in collaboration with other members of the band leadership team, including the Assistant Director, Librarian, Equipment Manager, pep band/marching coordinator, chamber music coordinator, and the nine-member Board of Directors, to provide a fun, worthwhile experience for the member musicians and guest artists. As part of programming responsibilities, the AD may select soloists, guest artists and guest conductors, assist in recruiting permanent and supplemental member musicians, plan guest clinician opportunities, and determine the best time utilization of rehearsals & sectionals. The Houston Pride Band is a non-profit organization and is able to provide the Artistic Director with a monthly stipend for his/her efforts, as well as reimbursement for approved expenses incurred during the discharge of his/her duties.
• Collegiate education in music, with a specialization in music education or conducting preferred.
• Proven experience in rehearsal and performance techniques of wind ensembles, as well as a background with some collaborative experience with marching bands/pep bands.
• Effective, adaptive, and responsive communication skills, both in writing and public speaking.
• The capacity to effectively represent the band publicly when called upon to do so.
• Ability to work successfully & diplomatically with a community band membership that includes musicians of varying ages, backgrounds, ability, and temperament.
The Houston Pride Band has a nine-member Board of Directors which handles the day-to-day operations of the band, including arranging rehearsal space, performance venues and volunteer opportunities, communication, and most other band operations. The artistic director is primarily concerned with the concert season repertoire programming and rehearsal preparation. The Board of Directors will work closely with the Artistic Director to define roles and expectations accordingly, so that everyone involved can maintain a productive work-life balance.

Selected finalists will participate in an interview, and be asked to lead a sight-reading rehearsal (typically 1 hour) on a piece or pieces of their choosing. The Board of Directors may invite finalists to return to conduct one or more additional rehearsals on the same piece, or a piece selected by the current artistic leadership.
