Along with all the obvious technical potential, you need to get recommendations from their teachers. You can't have a bunch of kids in the percussion section who cannot pay attention, know how to be quiet, and not be generally disruptive. You must be able to trust them with moving from place to place, instrument to instrument with a minimum of noise and distraction. Many percussion problems stem from a lack of involvement in the rehearsal, but still want to have the right kind of kids in percussion. My 2 cents worth after 34 years of teaching band and percussion.
