In the past I have agreed with 'Respectfully' a lot. Last year though I tried an experiment with the NV 1C band I direct. When I saw Manhattan Beach Music and Frank Ticheli were releasing a band method I thought it had potential to replace our Tradition of Excellence books... So I had that group read through it. 4 pages in I knew there was no way in heck I would ever consider it a 'beginning band book' (Making Music Matter), but it's amazing for that type of second year setting to get kids caught up on things they missed. We played through most of the book a page a day and were done by the end of the semester. I had the strongest readers we've ever had in the group then.
I'm planning on doing the same pacing this year and try the second book with them second semester. Especially since going to contest with that group is a longshot due to eligibility I want to at least build better players for when they get in my high school program. I really do think that makes a great second year book! (Just most definitely never for true beginning students...)
