For clarinet, I like introducing low notes first. Learn Hot Cross Buns on B A G down low. Do register slurs. When it comes to from going A/Bb to B, just do it. I know that sounds ridiculous, but the only way to get good at it is doing it. Don't hype it up. Don't talk about how difficult it is and how theirs is harder than other woodwinds. Just do it. And do it more. Then do it again until they get it right. It won't be pretty (or necessarily enjoyable), but they'll get there. So many of student's struggles are because of "pre-existing" limits WE create for them.
