You really think publishers are going to help? Who do you think actually owns the copyrights? Tresona is basically the publisher's middle man. I have a feeling this is coming from the big publishers through Tresona. I wouldn't be surprise if by this time next year, Tresona told UIL, BOA, the Redneck County Marching Festival and Pig Hollern' Contest that they can record bands if they pay a sync fee, per band/per title. That fee would obviously be passed on to the bands.
: What if it were approached this way:
: A lot of highly competitive bands are using
: original music or custom arrangements for
: material. I have seen composers on this
: board say basically,"If you use our
: music, you have the rights to video".
: That's great.
: But what about all of us who use stock
: arrangements from the major publishers?
: Wouldn't this possibly impact their sales of
: music? Will directors start turning away in
: larger numbers from stock arrangements
: knowing the restrictions on videoing their
: bands? What about all of the pop tunes that
: we play for our drill teams? I would venture
: to say most of them are stock arrangements.
: No more videoing the drill teams' portion of
: half time? That's going to make a lot of
: parents happy!
: I think we need to get Hal Leonard and
: Alfred Music involved with this. If it could
: be shown as something that could impact
: their sales, they might help. And their
: pockets are a lot deeper than ours!

: Tresona got to BOA. Ok. BOA caved, and
: videos. Now Tresona got to UIL. And they
: caved. Goodbye UIL videos.
: But there is just one problem... BOA is a
: choice. UIL is required.
: Is UIL really in the business of taking away
: evaluation measurement tools? Would the
: state give a school a STAAR rating, without
: being able to see how each student scored?
: UIL lawyers, please for the love of
: everything decent, don't fall for their
: trap. Tresona has lost every school lawsuit
: and has been lambasted for their greed
: against school systems.
: Directors, if we do not press back on this
: issue now, it will be too late. Going to our
: 8th graders and holding up UIL judging score
: sheets is not an effective recruiting tool.
: Those videos are.
: I mean were.
