This is fiction after all. If a writer doesn't make the character go in the direction that you want I really don't think that they should lose everything "they hold dear". That seems extremely shallow and selfish and gives fans everywhere a bad name.
Think about it if you were in his shoes. He's writing a story and character the best way he knows how. If that was you and you didn't please every fan, would you want to lose everything you hold dear (friends, family, possessions, etc...)??
Think before you speak next time....
