You are right. If there had been no special issues, no minis, no nothing, just the return of Spider-Woman as a total background character, it would not have resonated anywhere, except here. People would have said, "Hey, Bendis brought back a second stringer and made her a Skrull, big whoop. He sure don't care about Jarvis or Dum Dum Dugan, so Spider-Woman's not immune."
But...the payoff cannot be wasted. To me, Bendis would have wasted four years of my time and reading to build Spider-Woman up, reveal her as a Skrull, then show that Spider-Woman is dead and buried. "Sorry, she did not survive the process", "We had to...neutralize her." So the point of the last few years would have been to just bring back an obscure character and make her into a villain for a story's sake. No heroic ending, no bolt from the blue, just story material and nothing more. We can care and have it resonate, but it will ring hollow if there is no true resolution.
