i agree...for the most part...with eva. if you have a good session of ground work, first...lunging, ground driving, leading exercises...set the mind frame that work is what is being done, and will be done til you say otherwise.

: I just bought a 4yr old american saddlebred
: who is still very green and has been ridden
: very little in the last two years. We are
: slowly making progress but often when I am
: on him he will randomly stop as if saying
: " sorry im done now" and REFUSES
: to move forward and often tries to rear up..
: but i turn him in a small circle before he
: can.. hitting him with the crop and kciking
: doesnt seem to phase him.. just make him try
: harder to attempt to rear.. if anyone has
: ANY suggestions.. i would love it thanks!

: OK, KC, obviously all horses are different.
: We are currently training a young horse at
: the barn I ride at and here's my suggestion
: for you. rearing is one of the most
: dangerous things for a horse to since he
: could go over backwards on top of you. Its
: good that you've learned to keep him from
: it. Have you taught him to be longed?? If so
: then longe him A LOT. Then get on him. If
: he acts up, longe him some more. Then get
: on him. Just do some simple stuff like
: walking on the rail, or a slow trot, cause
: he'll be tired. If he doesnt longe, then
: when he acts up, unless he's trying REALLY
: hard to rear, stay on and just stand there,
: eventually he'll get board and walk forward.
: Then try your rail work again.
